FAQs for the Beginning of the Semester
Is a textbook required for this class?
The textbook we use is recommended (not required) and has a free online version.
Is purchasing a clicker a requirement for your class?
No. We do use the clicker system. However, we do require that you use the no cost web option (phone/tablet/laptop) with the UT provided license.
Why isn't the homework system accepting my answer and/or units?
In general, you should enter the numeric answer, followed by a space, followed by the units (with no spaces).
You can use the "UNITS" button on the homework page to see examples of valid units.
You can use the "Format Check" link for each answer to check your input format before submitting it with no grade penalty.
Will there be any opportunities to ask the instructor(s) questions about the lecture, material, or tests individually?
Yes, you can stop by an office and if the door is open, ask quick questions. On the Instructors/GTAs page you can also find links to schedule times to meet individually either in-person or virtually.
Who would be best to reach out to if none of the instructors are available?
We have a study room in ZEC 258 staffed by teaching assistants that are available to help with questions. You can find the schedule on the Help tab in the left side menu. If you are not in ZEC or it's outside of Study Room hours, you can also post on the Discussion Board, also available in the left side menu.
Is homework required to be written on physical paper or can I write it online and send it in?
Our requirement is that the homework be 'handwritten'. If you have a tablet and pen, then it is OK to handwrite directly to an app and submit an image from that. Otherwise, you will need to write it out on paper and submit a picture of your work.
Are utk.instructure.com and Canvas the same thing?
Yes. Instructure is the company that provides the Canvas system. EF 151 uses a custom website for the majority of the class, but maintains a Canvas home page to allow you to easily get from Canvas to our custom site.
