  • TCE AY 24-25 Undergraduate Research Program
This program is open to freshmen and sophomore engineering students and is designed to support undergraduate engineering students who want to start a new undergraduate research experience (i.e., the student must not have had a previous paid research experience with their prospective faculty mentor). Student applicants are required to seek out a faculty mentor and ask them to provide a letter of support indicating that they will provide guidance in choosing a research topic, conducting the project, and creating a research poster. Students may choose a faculty mentor from another college besides engineering, but must submit a short statement about how this work will enhance their engineering education.

The link below lists several TCE faculty that have indicated their interest in supporting new students as part of this program. While students are not limited to these faculty, this list could serve as a resource for students who are seeking a mentor.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rJ44yoA-xBrardba7-WbbxNtQbGrouYCrCH6Za2JZOE/edit?usp=sharing

The program will begin October 14 2024 and run through April 25 2025. Student participants will

    • be paid $15 per hour for up to 158 hours during the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters
    • be expected to commit to at least 6 hours per week up to a maximum of 10 hours per week
    • receive a budget of $1000 for materials and supplies to support the project (funds not spent can be used to pay for additional work hours beyond 158)
    • be required to attend 3 professional development seminars during the period of the program
    • be required to display a poster at EUReCA in April (date TBA but probably Apr 15 or 22)
Please complete the following application by October 1, 2024 to be considered. Each student can only submit one application. Decisions will be communicated by October 8. Direct questions to Dr. Kevin Kit (kkit@utk.edu).

  • Welcome to EF 157
We would like to welcome you to the University of Tennessee and in particular to EF 157 Honors Physics for Engineers I. Our first class will be in the Zeanah Engineering Complex (ZEC) 360 on Mon, Aug 19. This class meets every weekday: 50 min on MWF(Mon/Wed/Fri) and 75 min on TR (Tue/Thur). Check your schedule for your correct class time and room number for each day.

We will be using this website to manage all aspects of this course: https://efcms.engr.utk.edu/ef157-2024-08.

Please login and make yourself familiar with the Syllabus and structure of the site. There is an assignment you can start working on before the first class if you want. (The actual deadline is 8am Friday Aug 23). Go to Learning Pages (left menu) and then 1-1: Intro to EF 157. As you go through the various tabs, there are some click-to-reveal text, 2 forms to fill out, a short video to watch, and example questions to answer. The Background Form and Picture Upload are important to us because they help us get to know you faster.

You can find a Math Review on the left menu that highlights the importance of different skills to our physics class. Being familiar with these skills will help you solve physics problems in less time and with fewer errors. It includes some optional math questions that do not impact your grade in any way.

You can also explore other parts of the site (Announcements, Calendar, Research Paper, Help, Procedures, Resources, Discussion Board) or start working on the pre-class assignments for Lecture 1-2 if you'd like. We will cover the structure of the class, how to navigate the website, introduction of teaching assistants, and more on the first two days of the semester (Mon Aug 19 and Tue Aug 20).

We hope the coming year will be rewarding and successful for all of you.
    Drs. Kit & Hicks
