Dr. Penumadu (https://cee.utk.edu/people/dayakar-penumadu) and Dr. Stephen Young in Civil and Environmental Engineering want to hire an undergraduate majoring in Materials Science & Engineering or Chemical Engineering to work in their research group. The work will involve rheological properties of materials.
- Starting pay rate: $15/hour
- Minimum work hours: 10 hours per week during Fall/Spring terms (20-40 hours/week during summer term). Must be available to work during summer term.
- Minimum GPA: 3.5 or higher preferred, 3.25 or higher acceptable as well
- Student should be a self-starter
- Will involve learning and evaluating rheological properties (deformation of materials) of composite materials by operating a rheometer. Can include additional mechanical testing and microscopy.

updated Mon Apr 7th 6:41 pm - EF 320S - Engineering Design in K-12 EducationEF 320S - Engineering Design in K-12 Education will be offered for Fall 2025. It focusses on outreach, service-learning, and community engagement for the K-12 school system. It is open to all engineering students and is now listed under the university's Service-Learning Designation. The course is only 2 credit hours but will still meet the introductory service-learning breadth requirement for the Cook Grand Challenge Honors Program. Furthermore, the outreach events and the new "S" designation may also be applicable to service hours and requirements needed for other student organizations and/or other honors societies.

EF 320S - Engineering Design in K-12 Education

This course will give students the opportunity to apply the engineering design process within the context of K-12 education through engagement with local schools. Students will develop, refine, and implement programming to teach K-12 student's aspects of engineering. To support this process, students will learn basic education theory and read current scholarly articles on research-based practices to teach engineering in K-12. Repeatability: May be repeated. - Hands-on lab experiments involving the testing of prestressed, precast beams.
- Familiarizing with static and impact testing of actual long bridge beams.
- Preparing concrete mixes, performing 3D concrete printing, and assisting in mechanical tests.

updated Tue Feb 25th 1:17 pm - Potential Expo Conflict With Tue Mar 4 RecitationThe Engineering Expo is 1:00 - 5:00 on this day, but we will be reviewing for Exam 2 during recitation. If you want to attend the Expo, but it conflicts with your recitation, these are your options.
- Attend another section to still receive full credit for participation. You must fill out the form below by noon Fri Feb 28 to take this option.
- If you can cannot attend any of the other recitation sections that day, you will have the opportunity to submit a makeup assignment before your recitation time for up to 80% participation credit. The makeup assignment is only an option for those who have valid conflicts at the other times and who fill out the form below by noon on Fri Feb 28. The makeup assignment will be made available starting on Tue Feb 25.
- Receive a 0% participation grade if you do not attend recitation and do not choose one of the options above.
If you want to choose an alternate time or assignment, you must complete this form by noon on Fri Feb 28.

- Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)If you are looking for a research experience this summer, I would recommend that you consider applying for a REU. These are funded by the National Science Foundation and are hosted at universities. A typical program runs for 8-10 weeks in the summer and includes social events, dorm housing, meals, some travel money, and a stipend of about $5,000 - 7,000. This is a good opportunity to gain some research experience while living in another part of the US. Most of the application deadlines are in February and March. You can search for REU sites by topic and/or state at the NSF site below:

The application deadline is February 15.The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) focuses on interdisciplinary nanoscale research at the interface of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering. Each REU participant will work directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups and be part of the larger VINSE community.

- There are Pre-Lecture questions for the first lecture class (1-1) on Wednesday. We’ve extended the deadline until Fri Jan 24, but we would encourage you to complete these before class on Wednesday.
- Please note that scientific (but not graphing or programmable calculators) will be allowed on exams this semester. See syllabus for more information.
